What's the best way to make sure our pup doesn't get poisoned by a cane toad?

Try to train or keep them away from toads, including dead ones, which will make them sick but probably not kill them. If they do get the venom in their mouth, wash out their mouth with the hose and get them to a vet quickly. There are no solutions I am aware of .
